Stacy is a young girl who lives in the Suburbs in the 1950s. She loves her dog, Spots, and tossing him his ball. She is usually at the park doing so, every afternoon. One day, Stacy was tossing the ball and it landed in a tall tree.
She was standing 14 feet away from the tree, looking at the tree and the ball at the angle of 55 degrees. She wants to know how high up the ball is. She uses trig to find out that the ball is 20 ft, using tan(55) x 14, which is 19.9, to get the height of the ball.
Still too far...
Stacy decides to try and use a rock to boost her height. She finds a large rock, which lifts her height up to 7 ft, instead of 5 ft. She is now looking at the tree from a 46 degree angle. She wants to find how far away she is from the ball now. To do so, she does tan(45) x 7, to get 7 ft. The ball is now 7 ft away.
She decides to use a stick to get herself closer to the ball. Using the stick. She is 2 feet away and is able to knock the ball out of the 5 foot distance and onto the ground! She decides to figure out the angle. She does sin^-1 (2/5), to get the angle, which is 23.5 degrees.
Stacy gets the ball from out the tree! Her and Spots have a fun rest of the afternoon, gently, tossing the ball back and forth at the park!
