  • My Professional Learning Communities
  • One of the most important things I have learned in my journey as an educator is the importance of building professional relationships with people, who will challenge and push me to grow. I believe that my colleagues are assets to our learning communities. During most of my career, my interactions were face-to-face in real time, usually during the work day. I also curated ideas and resources online through articles and blogs written by educators and researchers. Within the last 4 years, I have also made virtual connections, which are interactive. Technology has provided the opportunities for inspiration and learning that breaks the barriers of time, location, and space.
  • Site-Based Colleagues
  • About 60% of time is shared with with my colleagues in my current and former school districts. My interactions involve planning, collaboration, implementation, and reflection on ways to best support student learning.
  • Conferences, Forums, and Other Professional Development
  • 20% of my time is devoted to participating in forums, conferences, trainings, and other professional development. I connect with people, who are in similar roles. I learn about new ideas, tools, and strategies. I also often have the opportunity to develop ideas and strategies for implementation with fellow attendees.
  • Social Networking
  • 10% of my time is spent with my virtual PLN. I have connected with educators and other professionals from all over the world through Twitter and Facebook. We exchange ideas and resources through Twitter Chats. They often provide fresh perspectives and innovative insights. Here are some of my favorite chats: #txeduchat, #caedchat, #tosachat, and #teachwrite. I also follow ideas and resources shared using hashtags. I have participated in Facebook Live events with learning communities. What is wonderful is that some of these online connections have become live, in-person connections through various circles and events.
  • Professional Organizations
  • 5% of my PLN is composed of networks made through my memberships in professional organizations, such as CUE and International Literacy Association. My membership gives me access to training and learning experiences. It also provides access to tools, strategies, and resources that I use to develop my own professional learning experiences.
  • Curation + Bookmarking
  • 5% of my time is spent curating ideas and resources online. I read articles and blogs written by educators and researchers. I also read the news to stay current on topics related to education, including research and politics. I bookmark websites and subscribe to blogs that I tend to revisit. I may not ever connect with the authors of these articles, blogs, or sites, but I have found their online publications to be wonderful resources that I can access at any time and location.
