Lizbeth's mom is walking to work, while her dad is going out to look for a job. Lizbeth and Joey, her brother, finished their chores and are going out to play with other children. Lizbeth is still childish and playful at this point of the story.
Miss Lottie is taking care of her marigolds when the kids throw the stones and destroy her beautiful flowers and Miss Lottie gets very angry. At this point in the story, Lizbeth is still childish and immature.
Lizbeth gets angry and goes to the Marigolds to rip them all out in frustration, and then Miss Lottie comes out. At this point she realizes she is no longer a child anymore, and she has reached adulthood.
