In California, the spring changes to summer and produce begins to grow on the farms. Farmers who have spent years and years developing ways to free their crops of insects, mold, rusts and blights are hoping that this year is the year.
The fruit grows heavy on the trees. Crutches must be placed beneath the limbs in order to keep them from snapping.
Behind the success of the crops was the men with knowledge who tested endless techniques for a more bountiful crop. Perfecting the seeds and roots and becoming doctors for their trees.
It's my own recipe!
Despite being men of knowledge, when the time to harvest comes they don't have the resources to dry and sulfur the plums, nor do they have the money to pay workers basic wages.
The grapes don't make good wine. People can't buy good wine anyhow. The farmers decide to press the grapes, stems, and dirt without any processing.
Mildew and formic acid are in the vats. The solution is to add sulfur and tannic acid. The smell of the ferment is not of wine but of decay and chemicals. Nobody cares as long as they can still get drunk from it.
