Herbert and Mr white were playing chess when they heard a knock at the door. Mr white answered it and the sergeant major stepped inside. He talked about his travels in India and finally they came to the subject of the monkey's paw. The sergeant major warned Mr White against it and talked about how it granted 3 men 3 wishes and that 2 people had already had theirs, then he threw it in the fire. Mr White retrieved it and pocketed it for his own use. Then the sergeant major swiftly left.
Mr White was eager to use the paw so he held the paw up and said "I want 200 pounds!" The weaher changed and a door creaked. Herbert went to work as they thought nothing happened. Time passed and a man arrived. He came with bad news he said that their son had died at work and that they would give 200 pounds for compensation.
Early in the morning Mr White woke up to see his wife crying by the window. She was crying about her son. Then it came to her, why didn't they use the monkey's paw to bring their son back to life. But Mr White new that if their son came back to life her would not be right or normal. His wife forced to go and get the paw immediately. So he fetched the paw and he held it up and said, "bring my son back to life!" Then...
...There was a knock at the door, and another, and another! Mrs White rushed down to the front door and tried to open it but the bolt was too high for her. Mr White thought quickly and it came to him, he could use the last wish to wish his child was not behind that door. Mrs White pulled up a chair and stood on it. As she slid the bolt back Mr White muttered, "I wish for my son not to be behind that door!" Then the knocking stopped.
