During the time period of 1789 France started taxing things bought by citizens such as food.
I wonder why everything is being priced higher...?
Les prix sont plus élevés
In 1789 King Louis XVI called a meeting of a special assembly called the Estates-General. They were three groups called the, the nobility (First Estate), the clergy (Second Estate), and the common people (Third Estate). The Third Estate refused to meet as a separate group because they knew their vote would be outnumbered by the nobility and clergy.
So instead of joining the other estates the Third Estate left their meeting and went outside to a tennis court. Once they were there, they declared themselves the National Assembly of France. They also swore the Oath of the Tennis Court which was a promise that they would someday write France a constitution.
People by now were enraged at the government so groups of people started arming themselves. On July 14, one of these groups went to the Bastille (a prison in Paris) demanding the governor to give them his guns and cannons. In the confusion a battle broke out killing the governor, soldiers, and other officials. After the battle the prisoners in the Bastille were free.
Later in August the National Assembly fulfilled their promise and passed the Declaration of the Rights of Man. This document was a statement of the principles of the Revolution. And the famous quote, "liberty, equality, fraternity" was used as their battle cry.
"liberty, equality, fratirnity!"
In 1791, King Louis XVI tried to secretly leave Paris but was caught and brought back to Paris. Once people realized this some said he should be convicted of treason, or attempting to overthrow government. But in the end the assembly agreed that he should be put to death by decapitation.
