Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States: Why did they oppose it?
  •  And this would give Southerners an advantage.
  • The balance between slave and free states will be ruined.
  • Northern Free States: Beliefs about Congressional Power?
  • I agree.
  • It's Congress choice on whether a state should be free or slave state.
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • I fear that the Compromise will not help get rid of slavery.
  • I think that in fact it will expand slavery.
  • The balance between slave and free states would be messed up and the number of slave states would be plus one. And because they would have plus one, this would give Southerners an advantage.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • With Missouri added as a slave state, the ratio of free and slave states will be unbalanced.
  • Northerners believed that it was in Congress’ power to choose whether or not a state should be a free or slave state.
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about States' Rights?
  • It's popular sovereignty, states can vote on whether to be a free or slave state.
  • Northerners thought that with the compromise, it would not be helping to abolish slavery. It would actually be expanding it.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • I fear that the Compromise will abolish slavery.
  • Southern states supported the compromise because Missouri would be added as a slave state which would unbalance the ratio between slave and free states in Congress. This unbalanced ratio would be a benefit to Southern states.
  • And the unbalanced ratio will be a benefit to us.
  • They believed in popular sovereignty, where territories applying to become a state could vote on whether to be a free state or a slave state.
  • I agree.
  • They feared that Congress would get rid of slavery. And because slavery was used so much in the South for labor and farming, the Southern economy would go down. They also feared that their slave representation would go down.
  • And this will greatly affect our slave representation and our economy.
