Storyboard Text

  • I speak on behalf of California and request California's inclusion to the Union as a free state.
  • California can't become a free state! It'll upset the free/slave state balance! It will give the North too much power!
  • If California wants to enter the Union as a free state, several compromises will have to be made in order to satisfy both the northern and southern states
  • Henry Clay
  • We'll allow the North to win over California as a free state and prohibit the slave trade in our capital
  • Northern state
  • And to silence the South, we'll give Texas 10$ million for the land it lost to New Mexico, we can implement a new Fugitive Slave Act that will prohibit the aid of an escaped slave, and we will grant popular sovereignty in land acquired from Mexico
  • Southern State
  • After many arguments and confrontations, all of the conditions of Clay's proposal were approved and the Compromise of 1850 was implemented
