Late one night Max the Jew traveled and came to the Hubermann house. Since Max's dad saved Han's life, Han's payed him back by hiding his Jewish son in his basement.
Nazi's came to the Hubermanns house to inspect their basement to see if it was big enough to hold people during the raids, Max didn't have enough time to go somewhere else, so while the soldier was in the basement Max was trying to hide. Luckily he didn't get caught.
When Hans Hubermann left for the war it was a turning point in Liesel's life because he was always there for her and he comforted her.
