LORD OF THE FLIES CHAPTER ONE THE SOUND OF THE SHELL
Ralph and Piggy find their way to the beach through the jungle and find a conch shell in the lagoon while bathing. Piggy tells Ralph to use it to call the other boys - who were on the plane which crash landed after being attacked - to the beach.
Ralph blows the conch and boys start to appear from the jungle and palms. Among them is a group of choir boys dressed in black cloaks and square caps with a tall, red-haired, and freckled leader named Jack Merridew.
The boys decide to vote and elect a chief to maintain some type of order. The choir boys vote for Jack and every one else votes for Ralph. Jack is humiliated but Ralph gives him control over the choir to be hunters.
Ralph decides to scout out the island with Jack and Simon. They travel through the jungle and up the mountain soaking in the view of the sea and the view of no civilization. Ralph claims it as a good island; it is their island.
As Ralph, Jack and Simon make their way back to the beach, Jack draws his knife when he sees a pig but hesitates to kill it; they all knew they wouldn't be able to bear the blood. But Jack promises to kill the next time he has the chance.
