The setting is the sea. In the exposition, Rainsford and Whitney are sailing to the Amazon on a hunting trip. They begin to talk about the "ship trap island" and almost grow weary then soon go to bed.
In the night, Rainsford is startled by a gunshot and ends up falling off the boat. He swims to "ship trap island" and finds himself at the doors of a mansion. He is soon greeted by a large man with a gun, Ivan.
After being invited in and introduced to General Zaroff, Rainsford is then told of how Zaroff is an accomplished hunter who simply has no joy in killing game other then other humans at this point. Rainsford now knows he will be the next victim of Zaroff's horrible game.
The climax of the story is when Rainsford is driven to the edge of the island by Zaroff and his hounds. His two choices are to be killed or jump to his fate, he chose jump.
WIth falling action, Zaroff arrives home satisfied he has yet again killed another human with ease . He eats a fine meal then heads to his room with sleep on his mind. Little does he know, he is in for a surprise...
In the resolution, Rainsford surprises Zaroff in his bedroom. They fight once more until, finally, Rainsford proves to be victorious.
