I am ready to die, but Death still will not take me.
Do you know where Death is? We are looking for him.
That's a lot of gold. Let's split it between the three of us.
The story starts off with three young men who lived a life full of sin. These sins included gluttony, drunkenness, gambling, and swearing.
The man told them that Death killed their old friend. The three boys, knowing that Death has killed a lot of people, decided to search out for Death and kill him.
While on the way to finding Death, the three young men came across a poor old man. The old man tells them how he has been trying to die for some time but Death won't take his life. Figuring that the old man has to be close to Death, they ask where to find him and the old man tells them to look underneath a tree down the road.
He poisoned the wine...now none of us will get the gold.
The three go to the tree, but instead of finding Death they find 8 bags of gold. They decide that they can't go into town with all the gold or people will think they are thieves. Forgetting about their journey to find Death, they instead decide to send the youngest into town to get food and wine.
When the youngest left to get the wine and bread the other two decided to make a plan to kill him when he returns. They wanted to split the money between the two of them rather than three. However, the youngest one also decided to try to kill the other two and keep the gold. When he bought the wine he put poison in it to kill the two.
8 bags of gold will set me up for the rest of my life.
Once the youngest returns the two older men jump and kill him. After killing him they decide to drink the wine he brought back, not knowing it's been poisoned, and end up dying as well. In the end Death had killed all three of them because of their greed for money.
