  • Act I, Scene II
  • If by your art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this roar, allay them (1.2, 1-2).
  • So let's see what happens...
  • Act I, Scene II
  • Alanso, the king of Naples, his son, Ferdinand, his brother Sebastian, his advisor, Gonzalo, another king, Antonio, and a few others are on a ship that is sinking. (Later we learn Ariel, a spirit, causes this.)
  • Act I, Scene II
  • Why, that's my spirit! (1.2, 254)
  • Prospero, a sorcerer, is the person controlling the weather so the ship sinks. His daughter, Miranda, is compassionate and requests her father to save those on the ship.
  • Act I, Scene II
  • Thou didst seek to violate the honor of MY CHILD! (1.2, 417-418)
  • Prospero informs Miranda that she is really a princess and that he used to be the Duke of Milan until his evil brother Antonio stole his crown while he was studying the liberal arts, and sentenced him to be exiled. A kind advisor, Gonzalo, gave them food on the boat, and they survived long enough to come to this island.
  • Prospero makes Miranda falls asleep, and Ariel, the spirit who burnt the ship, returns. Prospero is the one who sent Ariel to wreck the ship, and Ariel describes how he "burnt in many places" (1.2, 235). Although it seems the people died, Ariel saved the people who were on the ship and disperse them amongst the island. Prospero sends Ariel off again, promising him freedom for completing these tasks.
  • After Miranda wakes up, she and Prospero call to Caliban, a slave that they call a monster. (Often, this character is played by a minority race to show discrimination that occurred in Shakespeare's time, and still today.) We find out that Caliban used to be treated nicely until he tried to assault Miranda, which he doesn't seem to regret.
  • O ho, O ho! Would't had been done! Thou didst prevent. I had peopled else this isle with Calibans! (1.2, 419-421)
