  • Mrs. Mallard, who has heart trouble, is in her house. Her sister, Josephine, and Richard, a friend of her husband are there to tell Mrs. Mallard depressing news. Because of Mrs. Mallard's heart condition, Richard and Josephine must be careful of how they state the news.
  • Climax
  • Free! Body and soul free!
  • The conflict is that Mrs. Mallard's husband, Brently Mallard, died in a train wreck. Richard received the information about the railroad disaster in the newspaper office. The first name on the death list was Brently Mallard. Richard had doubled check by waiting for a second telegram.
  • Falling Action
  • Josephine tells her sister in broken sentences the death of her husband. Mrs. Mallard sobbed at once in her sister's arms. Her sister tries to comfort her.
  • Resolution
  • I'm sorry for your loss.
  • Mrs. Mallard runs into her room alone. She sits facing the open window. She feels an odd feeling consuming her. At first, she was fearful not knowing what this feeling was. She fought the feeling. But soon enough the words "free" were falling from her lips. She soon realizes that what she was feeling was joy and welcomed the feeling. She kept whispering,"Free! Body and soul free!" over and over again. Mrs. Mallard realized she would now be living for herself, and was unhappy in her marriage. She prayed that she may live a long happy life.
  • After Mrs. Mallard's change of heart of her husband's death, she comes down the stairs joyfully with her sister. When she arrives at the bottom she sees her supposedly dead husband by the door. Josephine lets out a piercing cry while Richard tries to hide Mr. Mallard's joyous wife from his view.
  • After seeing her husband Mrs. Mallard dies. When the doctor arrives he says she had died of a heart attack of joy. They assume that she died of joy realizing that her husband was alive. However, she died because she knows she will never be free with her husband being alive.
