Class begins and students are calm sitting awaiting instruction from teacher.
Teacher "Good morning class. Today we are going to be creating self-portraits using collage and cubism techniques we learned from Picasso"
Students start working and teacher walks around to each table to check on students work. She notices that one child is upset and threw a pencil across the table.
Teacher, "Okay Johnny I see that you are feeling upset why don't you come with me to the peace table to take a break"
Johnny, " I DON'T WANT TO. I CANT EVEN!"
Teacher, "Johnny is everything okay?"
Teacher" I see that you're still very upset. I'm going to give you 5 minutes here along to calm down. Here is a free draw paper and crayons. Sometimes it helps me when I'm upset to scribble on a page. Why don't you try" Teacher walks away, but keeps an eye on student as she circulates the room.
"Maria took all the pencils! She gave me the short one because I'm short she said it was the same size as me." (Johnny puts his head down on the table and whimpers)
"YA BECAUSE SHE'S MEAN TO ME!"
Teacher, "Johnny that sounds very upsetting. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Is that why you threw the pencil across the table?"
Teacher, " Johnny can you tell me what happened after I gave the instructions to the class"
"Yes those are both great options. Good job. You could of also used your words to tell her that made you feel upset rather than showing her by throwing the pencil" "Do you feel ready to talk to Maria about what happened?"
After 5 minutes the teacher comes back to check on Johnny
" I could of told her to stop, or told you what happened"
Yeah I'd like to go back to my seat and I will apologize to my table for throwing the pencil.
Teacher, "Johnny I love your scribble drawing it looks like a tornado!" "When Maria said those words to you that made you upset what would of been a better choice to make instead of throwing the pencil?"
Johnny goes back to seat and Maria and him apologize to each other and work calmly for the rest of class.
