Aluminum oxynitride is used in missiles because it is very transparent to infrared radiation, more than regular glass, which allows for infrared radiation to pass through the transparent aluminum, better enabling the missile to track the intended target.
And the helicopters?
Transparent aluminum is used in helicopters and other aircraft because the material prevents scratches and damage from rocks and sand which increases safety and can tolerate rock strikes at over 4 times the impact force required to shatter regular glass.
Oh wow, that's fascinating!
It is isn't it? In the future we hope to use transparent aluminum as cell phone screens, in banks and government buildings as well as in police cars and armoured bank vehicles.
That would be so cool!!!!
The only problems are that transparent aluminum is very expensive and is more difficult to manufacture than regular glass.
Later that day...
Thank you so much for showing me around today Mr. Murphy! I had so much fun! I can't wait for tomorrow.
