The moment he saw that shadow he knew it was time to worry. He hit in the bush hoping he would not be noticed…..
Spikey is a long brown stick insect with two wings and six legs. He is three centimetres long and very camouflaged. He loves visiting his friends in the garden – Buzzy Bee, Lady Bird and Green Grasshopper.
Today had gone well, he had arranged to meet Buzzy Bee in the stickiest part of the garden. But Buzzy Bee had not arrived. Spikey was trying not to be impatient. He was walking back and forwards looking at the garden. The garden was very pretty, there were blue, purple, red, green and yellow flowers and some big vines and roses. Spikey breathed in the air and it smelt like a mixture of flowers, cut lawn and bark.
After five minutes of waiting for Buzzy Bee he found himself in great danger. A hungry, black, tiger-like cat was stalking Spikey. Waiting to get him. The cat spotted the stick insect with his good eyes and was about to pounce on the bush to eat Spikey. Spikey was hiding so no one could notice that he was there. Spikey could smell the cat’s tuna fish breath. He could see the cat’s sharp claws, big and teeth like, ready to eat a stick insect.
Spikey was thinking he was going to be eaten. He clung to the bush so that he would not fall off.
Spikey was ready to hear the crunch of the cat eating him. All of a sudden he heard a voice:
“Shoo,” yelled a boy.
Spikey heard the cat run away as the bushes rattled. He felt soft and warm hands picking him up from the bush.
The boy looked at Spikey and Spikey looked at the boy. Spikey thought the boy looked nice. His hand was a pale sandy colour and his eyes were as blue as the ocean on a sunny day. His hair was a chocolate brown colour and his face looked friendly and kind and he had freckles, they were sprinkled on nose like seeds on a loaf of bread. He smelt like peppermints mixed with the rubber from his bike handles.
The boy looked at Spikey. He carefully turned his hand to have a look at Spikey and he said:
“You look handsome. Look at your big legs and long body. My name is Christopher and you should come home to my house.”
Spikey nodded his head in approval.
Christopher took Spikey home to his house and put him in a container. The container used to be an ice-cream container and Spikey loved the smell of the vanilla ice-cream on the sides of the container. Christopher gave him juicy leaves to eat and a stick and some grass. Christopher talked to him every day and took good care of him. Sometimes Spikey crawls up to the top of his stick and looks over the sides of the container. Looking passed Christopher’s bed and out of the window, he sometimes sees a cat. Spikey did not have to fear about any cats because he was safe in Christopher’s house.
Sometimes on Sunny days, Christopher would leave his window open and Spikey’s friends, Buzzy Bee and Lady Bird and Green Grass hopper would come and visit him. Spikey shares his juicy leaves with his friends. Spikey is very happy living with this very kind boy and never having to fear being eaten by a cat again.
He lived happily ever after.
