The Things They Carried Chapter 6: Friends Summary
What happened in the chapter? Over time, Jensen and Strunk learned to trust each other again and even started going on missions and patrols together. This trust eventually turned into a pact between the two stating that if one were to get "wheelchair wounded," the other would have to give him a swift death. Later, Strunk stepped on a mortar round which blew off his right leg, realizing the agreement, Strunk started to beg Jensen for his life. Jensen agreed, but later when Strunk was being choppered to Chu Lai for treatment, he passed away, and this seemed to lift a huge weight off of Jensen's shoulders.
In this chapter when we see that when Jensen and Strunk make their pact, they both think a major injury and death as a distant thing, or even a fantasy, even times of war. But when Strunk is actually injured, he immediately wants to discard the agreement made in a time when death is knocking on his front door this shows the reader that O' brien and rest of his team feel that being injured and alive is better than being dead, no matter how much you try to make light of the situation.
