  • Richard E. Byrd was born in Winchester,  Virginia October 25, 1888
  • He was in the U.S naval academy from 1908 to 1912, and he fought in WWI until he had to retire because of a foot injury
  • May 9, 1926, flew from Spitzbergen, Norway, to the North Pole and back with Floyd Bennett
  • From 1928 to 1930 Byrd went on an expedition to Antarctica
  • On November 29, 1929, Byrd and Bert Balchen are the first people to fly over the South Pole
  • Also from 1933 to 1935 he went on a second expedition to Antarctica
  • In WWII he served as naval chief of operations
  • He was in charge of operations Deep Freeze and High Jump, they were expeditions to explore and claim land in antarctica
  • In 1955 he was made officer in charge of the U.S's Antarctic Programs
  • He died on March 11, 1957, in Boston, Massachusetts.
