  • Erosion is the opposite of deposition, the geological process in which earthen materials are deposited, or built up, on a landform. Most erosion is performed by liquid water, wind, or ice (usually in the form of a glacier). If the wind is dusty, or water or glacial ice is muddy, erosion is taking place.
  • In earth science, erosion is the action of surface processes (such as water flow or wind) that removes soil, rock, or dissolved material from one location on the Earth's crust, and then transports it to another location (not to be confused with weathering which involves no movement).
  • Both soil erosion by wind (blowing and deflation) and soil erosion by water (sheetwash and gullying) is to be expected if the protection of stabilizing vegetation is removed and these soils are exposed
