Storyboard Text

  • *iron transports oxygen to cells, creates red blood cells, maintains our immune system, and allows muscles to use oxygen to produce energy
  • Types of Iron
  • We are Heme Irons! We are found in the muscle meats of animals. Good sources include: beef, pork, chicken, and eggs.
  • Heme Iron is derived from the hemoglobin within the consumed animal. Allowing it to be absorbed into the blood at about 15-36%.
  • We are Non-Heme Irons! We are found in plant-based foods. Good sources include: nuts and seeds, beans, whole grains, and dark green veggies.
  • Non-Heme Iron is not derived from hemoglobin, thus it can only be absorbed about 2-20%, making it less effective than Heme :(
  • However the nutrition value in both Heme and Non-Heme Irons are important to a healthy diet!
