*iron transports oxygen to cells, creates red blood cells, maintains our immune system, and allows muscles to use oxygen to produce energy
Types of Iron
We are Heme Irons! We are found in the muscle meats of animals. Good sources include: beef, pork, chicken, and eggs.
Heme Iron is derived from the hemoglobin within the consumed animal. Allowing it to be absorbed into the blood at about 15-36%.
We are Non-Heme Irons! We are found in plant-based foods. Good sources include: nuts and seeds, beans, whole grains, and dark green veggies.
Non-Heme Iron is not derived from hemoglobin, thus it can only be absorbed about 2-20%, making it less effective than Heme :(
However the nutrition value in both Heme and Non-Heme Irons are important to a healthy diet!
