Once there was a Athenian hero named Theseus. He was the son of the athenian king, Aegeus. Aegeus went back to Athens before Theseus was born. Aegeus placed a sword and covered it with stone so one day his son if he was strong enough he could roll away the stone and go to athens to see his father.
Theseus rolled the stone with no trouble and went to seek his father.
When he reached athens, he was invited to a banquet by the king. The king was unaware that Theseus was his son. He invited him with a plan to poison him. It was not his idea it was Medea's, she knew through her sorcery that Theseus was the kings son.
Medea gave the poison cup to him Theseus wanted to make himself known so he brought out the sword and the king recognized him. The king immediately dashed the cup to the ground before he could drink it.
Long before theseus ever reached athens, the powerful ruler of crete named Minos had lost his only son, Androgenes, while the young man was visiting the athenian king. Androgenes was sent by the king to kill a very dangerous bull called the Minotaur.
So since every 9 years the people sent him a tribute of 7 maidens and 7 youths. It then became time for the next installment of the tribute. Theseus came forward and offered to be one of the victims.
