The Domino Effect & Truman Doctrine
The Domino Effect
If Korea or Vietnam falls to communism, so will all these other small countries! We have to stop it!
Truman: We must stop communism from spreading to countries like these!
The Truman Doctrine
These were both policies of the United States during the Cold War with the Soviet Union. The war was centered around capitalism vs. communism.
This was the belief that if a few countries in an area became communist, the rest of them would follow until the whole region of small countries was communist and the Soviet Union's sphere of influence would spread drastically.
This was a policy that president Harry S. Truman introduced which stated that the United States would try to keep communism from spreading the other countries, using military force if necessary. The Truman Doctrine and Domino Effect combined caused the USA to go to war in Korea and Vietnam.
