  • The tortoises can withdraw their head, legs, and tail into their shell providing themselves protection from their predators such as coyotes or foxes.
  • Here is a tortoise burrowing themselves in the sand to stay cool underneath the sand and protect themselves from predators.
  • To make use of the infrequent rainfalls, tortoises dig shallow pits to collect water
  • The tortoises may be found waiting by these shallow holes when rain is in the forest
