After the argument between Jeanette and her mother on Rosemary leaving Rex, Rosemary never told Rex about Jeanette’s position on her wanting Rosemary to leave him, Rex and Jeanette sat on the porch and laughed with each other. It was getting very hot in Welch, and Jeanette and Brian decided they wanted to go to the public pool, but all of the white children that went called the children trash and bullied them away from the pool. Jeanette got invited to the morning free swim with Dinitia and she swam with her. It was said to be the happiest moments of her life. Days after a child-welfare man came to the door when Jeanette was home alone and was asking if her parents were unfit and if they treated her badly. Jeanette then confronted her mother about getting a job and Rosemary reluctantly told her she would. Jeanette started going to Welch High School and dinitia was no longer going to school after she informed Jeanette she thought she was pregnant. Jeanette then started becoming self conscious about her appearance, she decided to make her own braces to fix her teeth. She created a head-gear like contraption that her father saw and encouraged.
”It was a line I heard Dinitia use. She smiled at it, and the women all shrieked with laughter. One of the dancers dumbed her hip up against mine. I felt welcome enough to give a saucy bump back” (Walls 200).
After the argument between Jeanette and Rosemary, Jeanette and Rex sat on their back porch and laughed together.
It then becomes very hot I never Welch, so Brian and Jeanette decide to go to the public pool, where the children swimming there bully them to leave.
”I saw Dinitia once or twice around town after that, and we waved but never spoke again. Later, we all found out she’d been arrested for stabbing her mother’s boyfriend to death” (Walls 202).
Dinitia then invited Jeanette to swim with her and her friends at the early morning swim, where there would be no white children to bully her.
A child-welfare man then came to Jeanette’s house when she was home alone, and started talking to her about her parents parenting. This prompted Jeanette to talk to her mom about getting a job.
Jeanette soon began 7th grade. The times she saw Dinitia they only spoke through passing notes. Dinitia once tells Jeanette she’s pregnant. Shortly after, Dinitia stops going to school and Jeanette later finds out she went to jail.
Jeanette soon becomes very self-conscious of her teeth and creates her own braces. Her father encourages this.
