Storyboard Text

  • Aim: To investigate the behaviour of children before and after television was introduced to the town, and to compare the children's behaviour to other towns that did have television
  • Two observers were used to watch the children in the playground, but only started to record the observations once the children were used to their presence
  • Aggression was measured in school, leisure activities, IQ, creativity and reading abilities before and after TV was introduced
  • The town that was used in the study was given a false name, Notel. Then it was compared to two similar nearby towns, which were also given false names: Unitel and Multitel. All towns were stiduied before the introduction of TV at Notel, and two years after the introduction. This is so comparisons could be made.
  • Children and adults spent less time on leisure activities
  • Findings for Notel
  • Children were twice as aggressive
  • Children were less creative and their IQ levels dropped
  • Increased gender differences were reported
  • Over 2 years, all towns saw an increase in agression
  • Notel has the biggest increase in aggression
  • Comparisons with Unitel and Multitel
  • One TV channel or lots, seems to have similar effects on children's behaviour
  • Conclusions: •TV affects the level of aggression shown in children •TV also affects the intellectual and creative development of children
