Socs vs. Greasers
Darry challenges Ponyboy by pushing him to be the best he can be. Ponyboy thinks that Darry doesn't love him because he's so hard on him, but Ponyboy does love Darry no matter what. Darry impacts Ponyboy whenever he helps or hurts him. Towards the end of the story, Ponyboy begins to understand Darry more and realizes that Darry is just trying to help him. Ponyboy grows to understand people better.
The Socs and the Greasers rivalry relates to Ponyboy's everyday life because Pony has to plan his life around the Socs and always be careful. Ponyboy became harder because of this conflict and he is always much more aware and has to be safe all the time. Ponyboy doesn't like that they fight so much The Greasers have to deal with it, and fight back in order to protect themselves.
Johnny can challenge Ponyboy if he's a little careless and gets Ponyboy into bad situations. Ponyboy and Jonny are best friends and they understand each other. They'd do anything for each other so if Johnny's actions are negative, they would affect Pony badly. Johnny and Ponyboy became very close through all the rough times because they trust each other. Johnny teaches Ponyboy to live his life and stay unique.
