Esperanza grew up on a ranch called El Rancho de las Rosas with her mother, father, and grandmother. she had plenty of servants and was looking forward to her next birthday party where she knows she'll receive lots of gifts.
a couple days before her birthday Esperanza's father hadn't returned yet. it got later and later and finally they realized that something had happened. the servants went looking forr him and found out he was dead.
mama! Get better! I love you.
then, Esperanza's house was burned down by her two uncles. they had no money and nowhere to go. One of the uncles made a proposition; it was that if Esperanza's mother married him they would live like how they once did. Esperanza's mother turned the offer down and she and the servants (Miguel, Hortensia, and Alfonso) and esperanza fleed. but her grandma is to weak to go with them.
Esperanza and everyone go to a camp in California and stay with Hortensia's family. their children are Pepe, Lupe, and Isabell. Esperanza does her part by taking care of them. she at first hates it, but she learns to adapt.
just as Esperanza gets the hang of living in California, a dust storm hits and Esperanza mother gets very sick and has to go to the hospital. Esperanza has to work ahrd and do maultiple jobs to earn money to support her and her mother.
Esperanza's mom gets better and she is suprised when Miguel brings her grandma to California and Esperanza feels life will be okay again. she feels as if she could rise above the world!
