In 1514, Pope Leo X launched a campaign to complete the rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica. So in order to raise the money, Leo sent out agents to sell certificates of indulgences. Johann Tetzel sold indulgences near Luther's parish at Wittenberg.
I need to go tell my family this!
By buying an indulgence you will be granted pardon from the punishment of sins!
In 1517 Luther took a stand about the indulgences Tenzel was selling was fake.
The indulgences are fake! They will not pardon your sins!
I can't believe I bought that!
How could Tenzel do such an evil thing?!
On October 31, 1517 ,Martin Luther, stood outside the castle church and posted a lengthy document. It contained a list of ninety-five theses, concerning the sale of indulgences.
Martin Luther had 3 main arguments
All people with faith were equal. Therefore, people did not need priests to interpret the Bible for them.
People could win salvation only by faith in God’s gift of forgiveness. The Church taught that faith and “good works” were needed for salvation.
All Church teachings should be clearly based on the words of the Bible. Both the pope and Church traditions were false authorities.
