  • Setting
  • Exposition
  • Rising Action
  • This story takes place in 1905, in New York City. "In the vestibule below was a letter-box into which no letter would go." (Henry 15).
  • Climax
  • It all starts with Della, counting how much money she had. Christmas was the next day. She only had $1.87. "Rapidly she pulled down her hair and let it fall to its full length." (Henry 16).
  • Falling Action
  • The James Dillingham Youngs had two main things they took pride in; Jims gold watch and Dellas hair. Dellas hair was long, just below her knee. She quickly puts her hair back up in a bun. She gets ready to go back out. "Mme. Sonfrie. Hair Goods of All Kinds." (Henry 16).
  • Resolution
  • "Will you buy my hair?" Della asked. (Henry 16). The barber lady tells Della she buys hair. Della then takes out her hair so the lady can take a look at it. The lady offers Della $20 for it. They cut her hair, then Della rushes to get Jim a present.
  • Della comes home and hurries to fix her short locks. Jim comes home and Della gets nervous, thinking he won't like her new look. He comes home and has a wierd expression on his face. He is shocked her hair is gone, but still loves her. "Don't make any mistake Dell about me. I don't think theres anything in the way of a haircut or shave or shampoo that could make me like my girl any less." (Henry 18).
  • "But if you'll unwrap that package you'll see why you had me going awhile at first." (Henry 18). They got eachother gifts, but the gift they got for each other went with what they spent it on. The couple decide to put back their Christmas presents for awhile.
