  • Assassination of Arch Duke Ferdenand
  • The Sinking of the Lusitania
  • Battle of Somme
  • On June 28th, 1914, Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. His wife Sophie was shot also. The political objective of this assassination was to break off Austria-Hungary's South Slav provinces so they could be combined into a Yugoslavia.
  • Trench Warfare
  • On May 1st, 1915 the Lusitania was torpedoed (explosive, self propelled weapon) by a German U-boat. She sank in 18 minutes. 1,198 people were killed and only 761 survived. This event caused many other countries to turn against Germany, contributed to the American Entry in to WW1, and became a realting symbol to military campaigns.
  • Germany signs the armistice
  • The Battle of Somme took place on July 1st, 1916. After the British launch a ¨massive offensive¨ against Germany. German positions were pushed near the Somme. British soldiers poured out of their trenches and into no-mans-land. This is important because this was the first time tanks are introduced into battle.
  • Treaty of Versailles
  • Trench warfare is a type of combat in which troops could fight the opposing troops from trenches. This ended when the allies made a breakthrough attack in August of 1918.
  • The signing of the Armistice took place on November 11th, 1918. This was the making of a ¨truce¨ that ended the fighting in western Europe that compromised the First World War. This marked a victory for the Allies and a complete defeat for Germany.
  • The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty at the end of World War 1. This treaty ended the ¨state of war¨ between Germany and the allied powers. This was signed June 28th 1919, exactly 5 years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
