why did I have to be in this cabin full of 500 men?
In days I did not eat. *sniffles* torture this is.
I'm tired, hungry, and weak, I can barely walk.
Yes Vladek one moment.
You can hand me a shovel?
Abba work or in trouble we get.
SHHH, im trying to sleep.
I'm trying Vladek but im very scared, I do not want anyone to see me putting dirt in the hole from above.
Cover hole really good so we no get caught, straight to gas we go.
This scene shows us that in the barracks of Auschwitz there were many people living in one barrack together, as much as 500 men. They are suffering from starvation, they don't eat in long periods of time.
This scene shows us that the Jews were put out to work in the fields of the camps. They would work without having eaten anything, and because of this, they would very often die. Not only did they die from starvation but also from sickness, being to old and having to work so hard, not enough rest, and lastly not being clothed properly.
This scene shows the Jews including Vladek dug a secret tunnel to hide. They covered the hole with dirt so nobody could view it from above the ground. Hiding here gave them a chance to rest and relax somewhat, but it was terrifying to think that if they got caught they would go straight to the gas chamber.
