This group was subdivided into 2 groups. The higher and lower clergy. The higher clergy held the highest position. They managed churches.
The First Estate
The Second Estate (Nobility)
They took up 2% of the population. They didn't have to pay taxes to the king. They were the richest of the population. If you were born into nobility you stayed in nobility. Also they never had to work. They lived in luxury. They didn't care about the lower classes problems. They owned 25% of the land.
The biggest social group in France roughly making up 97% of the population . Had little rights and barely any political power. The Church required them to pay a 10% tithe, dues to the federal lord, and they had to pay the land tax to the king. They can be subdivided into three more categories which are the bourgeoisie, the peasants, and the san culottes.
