Storyboard Text

  • On August 19th, 1942, about 5,000 Canadians, 1,000 British troops and 50 United States Army Rangers were sent to raid the German-occupied port of Dieppe, france.
  • The battle was supposed to test the allies ability to launch an attack. the allies arrived by boat, and arrived to 5 different sections of the coast
  • little did they know, the Germans where heavily guarded and protected.
  • This will be a peice of cake. They don't stand a chance
  • Even though the allies had poorly planned the attack, they still outnumbered the German troops, 3-1
  • By the end of the raid, around 5000 canadian soldiers had died/been wounded.  The number of German casualties was around 500.  the battle lasted around 6 hours.
  • Since Germany was so heavily guarded, the allies had no choice but to retreat.
  • The battle of Dieppe was a huge loss for the allies, and later on used as propaganda for the Germans.
