  • King Louis XVI was an absolute monarch, meaning he had the the absolute power over his people. He was very easily persuaded, lacked self-confidence, and would often ignore obligations
  • The Estates-General was the gathering of the three estates. The first estate was comprised of the clergy. The second estate was the nobles, The third estate was everyone else. Each estate held 1 vote, which was unfair for the third estate as they had more people and would be outvoted by the other estates. The third estate pushed for 1 vote per person.

  • There were many problems leading up to the revolution. One of the reasons was the disagreement between he estates. Along with that there was a bad harvest which increased the priceof goods. Also, the King and Queen spent lots of money when supporting the American Revolution and their spending at Versailles.

  • After the estates disagreement, the third estate was locked out of the Estates-General meeting. The third estate then went to a local tennis court and formed the National Assembly. They vowed to keep meeting until a new constitution was formed
  • The Third Estate "stormed" Bastille, a prison in Paris. They freed the prisoners and took weapons and reserves to aid them.
  • The beheading of the king signified the ending of the absolute monarchy. It was also done because of the attempt to flee to Austria, suspicions were already arising.
