- Okonkwo was born into an ordinary Igbo family
- Okonkwo believed "the only thing worth demonstrating was strength". This shows his hubris.
- "This meeting is for men!"
- Okonkwo kills Ikemefuna, who was like a son to him. This was because "he was afraid of being thought weak."
- "Okonkwo did not taste any food for two days after the death of Ikemefuna." This represents Okonkwo realises what he has done is wrong.
- Okonwo's suicide is parallel to the Tragic Hero's.
- "You drove him to kill himself, and now he will be buried like a dog."
