In this slide, the "Not-so-Madman" was on his way to the old man's house. He has his lantern that he has shined into the old man's eye for the past 3 nights.
In this one, the "Not-so-Madman" is entering the old man's house. Although the old man has great hearing, the "Not-so-Madman" doesn't have to be as careful to enter the house.
Once the "Not-so-Madman" is in the house, he starts up the stairs towards the old man's room. Not closing the door to be careful that he doesn't risk waking the old man.
This is where the "Not-so-Madman" has to be careful. He has to carefully open the door so he doesn't wake the old man from his sleep.
The "Not-so-Madman" is still opening the door very carefully. Very close to being able to fit his head and the lantern in through the small gap.
The "Not-so-Madman" finally has enough room to fit his lantern and his head in the door. Then he very carefully opens up a sliver of the lantern so just enough will shine through and shine on the old man's vulture eye.
