  • Captains bargained for slaves through intermediaries know as pombeiros, or itinerant traders.
  • To ensure slaves were delivered for the goods supplied, captains relied on trust and prior commercial connections.
  • The captains would offer gifts as a token of friendly exchange.
  • Captains held relatives of African traders temporarily as pawns or pledges, they would be released once the slaves had been delivered to the ship.
  • Captains and their crew usually stayed on shipboard in Africa, they shouldn't venture in because Africa was unnown to Europeans.
  • Captains and their crews stayed on shipboard when in Africa because the Europeans did not have the linguistic skills to converse wiht the ethnic groups.
