  • Good morning kids! Today we will talk about the tensions after WWII, leading to the Cold War
  • First, there was the Arms Race which occurred in 1945 to 1990. What happened was that the US and USSR were both fighting in which had better weapons. This created a lot of tension between this two since they were competing in who had the best armed forces
  • Because of this Secretary of State George C. Marshall described the Marshall Plan as "An essential part of any successful action on the part of the United States is an understanding on the part of the people of America of the character of the problem and the remedies to be applied. Political passion and prejudice should have no part".
  • Then, the Marshall plan which was in 1947. Here, the US provided aid to Western Europe to help rebuild their economies. While the USSR thought they were doing this as a move to gain power in European countries. The tension was created because of this.
  • Later on, there was the Khrushchev Speech in 1956. Here it was demonstrated  how he was basically denouncing and claiming such an hypocrisy. He also states what capitalism is leading to and how the United States want to secure their position in the capitalist world.
  • “They claim they have united for defense against the "communist threat," But this is sheer hypocrisy!”
  • “By the mid-1950s, two powerful military alliances, Nato and the Warsaw Pact, were facing each other in Europe”
  • Finally the NATO/ Warsaw Pact in 1995 was another event that brought a lot of tension. Here the US and USSR made their own alliances. Basically they were picking sides in a possible war
  • Oh, thats the bell! Okay guys I hope you learned something about some of the events that increased tension leading up to the Cold War
