Whitney and Rainsford discuss hunting and they debate whether it is a cruel sport. They enter Ship-Trap Island and notice their crew is beginning to get nervous.
Rainsford falls into the ocean and attempts to swim to the ship. He is too late and watches the ship slip from view and decides that the only way to survive is by swimming towards the island. Being a skilled swimmer, he safely makes the journey.
Once on shore, Rainsford arrives at a castle and finds a man awaiting him. He brings Rainsford into the castle and brings him to a mysterious man: General Zaroff. He begins a conversation with the general, realizing that he hunts humans as a sport.
General Zaroff sends Rainsford into an enclosure in order to begin his game of hunting. He toys with Rainsford and believes that there is no way for him to survive his skilled hunting techniques. Rainsford finds a cliff that drops into the ocean, and being a strong swimmer, he decides to jump into the water and swim to shore.
General Zaroff prepares for sleep after what seems like a successful hunt. He comes to realize that Rainsford survived the game and has returned to end the game once and for all. General Zaroff was shocked at his survival and challenges Rainsford to a duel, the winner taking his place in the bed.
