In the 19th century a middle class woman has a wanting for more expensive things. Her husband then comes home to her with tickets to a party that includes high class people. She is excited to go, but is let down because she has nothing fancy to wear.
Madam Loisel is sad and wants a better social life and more elegant things that she can't have.
Monsieur Loisel brings home an invitation to a high class party to Madam Loisel. At first she is happy to go, but is sad because she doesn't have a nice dress to wear at the party. Monsieur Loisel then gives money to Madam Loisel to go but a dress. She also asks her rich friend if she could borrow her necklace to wear to the party.
Madam Loisel has returned home from the party and is undressing when she realizes that she has lost her friends diamond necklace.
Monsieur and Madam Loisel then get enough money to get the replacement necklace. They are then in debt and have to pay it off.
Madam Loisel then sees her friend after ten of being in debt. She then approaches her and her friend doesn't recognize Madam Loisel. When she finally does recognize Madam Loisel, Madam Loisel finally tells her about what happened to her necklace. Then Madam Loisel's friend tells her that the necklace she borrowed was fake!
