Storyboard Text

  • We formed the Indian National Congress in 1885, of which I later became the leader. Though it had a slow start, it grew rapidly after WWI, when the British became violent and hesitant to the political change they previously promised.
  • May we talk?
  • Welcome Mr.Mandela, How might I help you
  • Ok, Lately I've been thinking about the mistreatment of my people. How the European settlers and government leaders in South Africa imposed the apartheid to separate us from them, as though we were less of them.
  • Yes, follow me and we shall walk and talk
  • I understand, in India, the Europeans didn’t want to be mixed with us. They made sure we were aware of out racial and cultural differences. However, that lead to India gaining our own national identity.
  • They imposed “Rigid Laws” as a way to monitor our movement through our cities. They treated my people horribly.
  • I guess in a sense it also unified my people.  In South Africa, we formed the African National Congress in the hopes that our natives would be treated with the same civil respect as the Afrikaans.
  • My time in South Africa was great for me to develop my own political philosophy: satyagraha. It teaches that nonviolent confrontation is the best way to approach political action.
  • We were so inspired by your peaceful tactics of protest from your time spent in South Africa, as well as in India.
  •  In India, we held boycotts on British goods, and marched in protest of our position in government.
  • In South Africa, we did exactly what you did, as we were inspired by your peace movements. We also burned passes that all Africans were forced to carry. Our government, however, was not happy with this protesting. They severely repressed us, including shooting down 69 of our unarmed demonstrators at Sharpville, and banning the ANC.
