Mom took Jeannette and Brian to Welch Field Elementary. She insisted on enrolling them in class even though she has no paperwork about their past education
The very angry principal threw out many problems for the kids to solve. Finally he agreed to let the kids attend school, but they were put in special classes
As Jeannette and Brian got off the bus, Jeannette notices a tall black girl with a very mean smile. Right away, Jeannette is intimidated by her
While in her English class for students who need extra help, her teacher was mocking Jeannette and her mother
"They're convinced they're so special that they don't need to follow the rules other people have to follow (Walls 138).
Jeannette was very upset and tried to stick up for her family. To make matters worse, the girl she had spotted on the play ground stabbed her in the back with a pencil
Jeannette takes out the gross lunch that her grandma, Erma, packed and eats it all alone until it is time to go outside for recess
"You think your better than us?" (Walls 139). "You think you as good as me?" (Walls 139).
The three tall girls corner Jeannette and start making fun of her for missing buttons on her coat and her "entitled" attitude
The girls push Jeannette to the ground and continue to punch and kick her. More people join in on the attack and make a circle around Jeannette so no teacher can see. There was no stopping the girls until they got what they wanted
