Welcome to the first meeting for the Washington High Earth Club!
Before we do activities and volunteering, you need to know the basics of how the Earth works and Climate Change.
Earth Club! First Meeting October 4th
The greenhouse effect is what's causing global warming. It is when gases produced by cars, factories and animals block heat from escaping the atmosphere, like how greenhouses get hot because the heat cannot leave.
Heat gets to the Earth through electromagnetic waves, or radiation from the Sun. Radiation is basically when heat travels through the air. But the reason we have seasons, and temperature varies around the world, is because of it's round shape and rotation. During solstices, one pole receives 24 hrs of sun while the other pole has complete darkness.
But how does the sun create heat in the first place?
The sun's heat is made by thermonuclear reaction, which is when hydrogen molecules bind and form helium, releasing heat energy. The energy travels through waves, which have different wavelengths depending on the temperature.
The higher the energy, the smaller and quicker the waves are. The amount of waves per second is called frequency. Low frequency waves can travel farther.
