  • The expostition is shown when Whitney says,"The sea was as flat as a plate glass window. We were drawing near the island then"(Connell 62).
  • Climax
  • The inciting incident is when the book states, "The cry was pinched short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea closed over his head." (Connell 63)
  • Falling Action
  • The rising action is illustrated when General Zaroff declares to Rainsford,"Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" (Connell 74)
  • Resolution
  • The climax is revealed when the author notes the surprise Zaroff found, "A man, who had been hiding in the curtains of the bed, was standing there." (Connell 80).
  • The falling action is shown when the General admits to to Rainsford that, "I congratulate you, You have won the game." (Connell 80).
