  • The inciting incident is when the book states, "The cry was pinched short as the blood-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea closed over his head." (Connell 63)
  • Falling Action
  • The rising action is illustrated when General Zaroff declares to Rainsford,"Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" (Connell 74)
