Storyboard Text

  • Heath & Thompson (2006) found that males are at a greater risk of abuse by extra- familial perpetrators.
  • Benedict et al (1996) found that children who had been sexually abused in foster care reported significantly higher rates of depression than non-maltreated children.
  • Several different studies have found that child sexual abuse is associated with an increased likelihood of criminal behaviour (Fitzpatrick et al., 2010), Mersky & Topitzes, 2010)
  • Zach is eight years old and has been in and out of foster homes since he was three. He is currently being sexually abused by his 38 year old foster carer. Zach is very unlucky as he is only one of a very few to be sexually abused in a foster home (Hobbs, Hobbs & Wynne, 1999).
  • Due to Zach being sexually abused as a child, he suffers from depression and anxiety disorders, such at PTSD.  He also struggles socialising with people and does not have many friends (Briere & Elliot, 1994).
  • Glasser et al (2001) found that a small percentage of male perpetrators used pornography compulsively.
  • Im keen!
  • Hey lets meet up! Your really pretty
  • RATED
  • Zach often will engage in deviant behaviour, causing him to struggle in school and receive a proper education. Goldman & Bode (2012) made direct links between sexual abuse in care and their educational attainments, with victims reporting poor numeracy and literacy skills resulting in a negative impact on opportunities and outcomes over their life.
  • Zach has become dependent on alcohol and other drug-related substances to forget about the past and remove any pain and suffering (Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, 2009). Zach has poor interpersonal skills and will often socialise on his own.
  • Child sex abuse victims can be eight times more likely than non-abused members of the general public to develop alcohol and other drug-related disorders (Cutajar et al., 2010). Other researchers found that alcohol use is more problematic in male survivors of sex abuse compared to females (Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, 2009; Carr et al., 2010)
  • Being sexually abused has impacted Zachs' ability to trust adults and to form and maintain healthy relationships and social bonds (Benedict et al,, 1996; Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse, 2009). Therefore Zach has resulted in forming relationships with children and watching pornographic material.
  • Widom et al, (2008) found that males were at a significantly higher risk of sexual revictimisation in adulthood.
  • Zach has been caught sexually assaulting a female child, as well as possession of pornographic material. As a result Zach was sent to prison.
