Storyboard Text

  • The third IV was the team colour participants were told to follow (black or white). Participants were instructed to EITHER make a mental count of the number of passes made by the chosen team (easy task), or separate counts of bounce/aerial passes made (hard task). The final IV was hard/easy task given.
  • When doing the counting, did you notice anything unusual on the video?
  • Did you notice anything other than the 6 players?
  • Once the task was performed, participants were immediately asked to write their answers down, and then verbally answered a set of questions from experimenters. 'Yes' responses were recorded, and then they were debriefed, and offered the chance to watch the video again.
  • Did you see anyone else (besides the 6 players) on the video?
  • Did you see a gorilla/woman carrying an umbrella walk across the screen?
  • NEXT the transparent+ the gorilla: the easy task combined with following the white team 8% noticed, when the easy task and following the black team 67% noticed. Then the hard task combined with following the white team 8% noticed and the hard task while following the black team was 25%
  • FIRST the transparent condition+umbrella women: the easy task combined with following the white team 58% noticed, when it was the easy task and the black team 92% noticed. Then when it was the hard task and following the white team 33% noticed but when it was the hard task and the black team it was 42%
  • RESULTS: Only 192 out of the 228 participants results used
  • THIRDLY the opaque condition+the umbrella woman: when completing the easy task and following the white team it was 100% noticed. when following the black was combined with the easy task 58% noticed. When it was the hard task and the white tem 83% noticed and when it was the hard task and the black team 58% noticed.
  • FINALLY the opaque condition+the gorilla: when it was the easy task and the white team 42% noticed and when it was the easy task and the black team 83% noticed. However when it was the hard task and the white team being followed it was 50% of participants and when it was the hard task and the black team 58% noticed
  • The level of inattentional blindness depends on the difficulty of the task and ppts are more likely to notice visually similar things to the things they are paying attention to.
  • There is no conscious perception without attention
  • To conclude, if engaged in a primary monitoring task participants fail to notice an unexpected event
  • Inattentionsl blindness can affect us cyclists and motorbike riders as it causes problems with us being noticed by drivers.
