As you can see, the harsher we are towards the environment, the more money we get.
There has been a dispute between Costa Rica and Nicaragua, where Nicaragua sent troops to protect a project in the San Juan river, until the United Nations told them to stop. Hydroelectricity is a major industry in the Caribbean. This benefits the countries with electricity and money, but it can harm the environment where the power plants are made.
The population is growing more rapidly than the amount of resources the country has. This makes it difficult to find jobs and housing. This creates high amounts of pollution. This also increases the need for food, and so much agriculture can destroy the land. This can also result in more soil erosion. Also, the amount of buildings made for tuorism can affect soil erosion.
It can be very difficult for the countries to address these issues, as many of them are poor countries, and to harsh environmental laws may lose them to much money. Now, many environmental needs are beginning to be attended to by programs such as REDD and PRODESEC. It doesn't help that the region is already prone to natural disasters.
