Thomas Jefferson is running for president against John Adams. Thomas Jefferson has a tie with who was going to be his vice president, Aaron Burr, the jerk who killed Alexander Hamilton. Thomas becomes president and they amend the constitution to separate the ballots for president and vice president.
Jefferson is inaugurated, and John Adams throws a hissy fit and doesn't come. Before Adams leaves office though, he does lots of appointments, so he doesn't have to give up the courts.
Jefferson gets rid of many government workers, and decided to get rid of all taxes except for custom duties. The governments new way of income was to sell western lands.

The supreme court grows in power, also strengthening the power of the federal government. One guy, named William Marbury, was one of the many people appointed by John Adams as his last day of president, and he didn't get the correct papers to be a part of the judicial branch. The court said they couldn't give him his papers, and he went to court against the court. He lost terribly, and the Supreme Court became even more powerful.
