  • The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle of the civil war.
  • Some needed to find a job whereas some were trained their whole lives for this one moment.
  • The North and South collided here in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 1. In severe fighting, the Confederates swept the Federals from the fields west and north of town, but were unable to secure the heights to the south.
  • An estimated 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or listed as missing after Gettysburg.
  • Four months after the battle, President Lincoln created a dedication ceremony for Gettysburg's Soldiers National Cemetery to honor the Union soldiers to define the purpose of the war.
